Ladakh-based engineer turned educationist Sonam Wangchuk is among the two Indians who will be honoured with the Ramon Magsaysay Award this year. Wangchuk is the inspiration for Aamir Khan's character - Phunsukh Wangdu - in the film 'Three Idiots'. Wangchuk's community-driven learning systems in remote northern India have long harnessed science, nature and culture creatively for economic progress. The other Indian is Mumbai-based psychiatrist Bharat Vatwani who cares for mentally ill destitute. Vatwani and his wife Smitha have in the last three decades treated and reunited 7,000 destitute schizophrenics with their families.
