During rains, Kannaginagar, a Tsunami-settlement set in low-lying land, gets flooded. It takes longer for water to clear from the locality, as multiple drainage systems are often clogged with single-use plastics and other waste.
Unemployment is rife in this locality, and World InkLink Charitable Trust started "Buddy-Bin", an initiative to tackle the threat to the environment posed by plastic waste and to generate employment opportunities for the women Buddy-Bin is the name of an upcycled bin, made with single-use plastic waste retrieved from the locality, says a press release from the Trust.
"The threads of these upcycled bins are weaving a story of change in Kannaginagar," says Shaswati, Managing Trustee of InkLink Trust. "360 women from the locality have been provided free training on how to make buddy-bins and teh work serves as a source of sustenance for them and their families, besides promoting the goal of sustainability."
Shaswati says the work is also therapeutic as the weaving of bins bring the women of Kannaginagar together, helping them share their sorrow and joy.
“We have given this name to the bin, because it is a friend to them, and serves them in their need,” says Shaswati.
