GURUGRAM: Silver Oaks Condominium Association (SOCA), DLF 1, formally inaugurated their first solid waste management plant on Tuesday, after it had been functional for 15 days.

The project is partly funded by DLF Foundation and will be maintained by Green Bandhu, a city-based solid-waste management firm. It is expected to reduce the total amount of garbage dumped at the Bandhwari plant by approximately 15,000kg a month, and will convert 500kg of organic waste into compost every day.

The township has invested Rs 10 lakh in the plant, which has already produced 3,000kg of manure since it became functional 15 days ago. DLF Foundation said they have developed two different standard operating procedures for plotted and highrise apartments.

“For plotted flats, both composting and curing units will be at the same place, because they have more space,” said Vinay Sahni, CEO, DLF Foundation. “Whereas in highrise apartments, the compost unit has been established inside the township while curing units are located at a two-acre farm on the Gurugram-Faridabad highway,” he added.

Sahni said the Silver Oaks’ RWA is supposed to ensure all residents segregate their waste as solid and liquid. “Liquid waste, which forms 80% of household waste, would be added to compost unit where it will be shredded and squeezed. The liquid part would be discarded, while the remaining content is carted away and put into the curing units, where they are left untouched for 21 days, by when it turns into manure. It is then sold to be added to farms,” he said.

“It is after years of hard work that we have managed to successfully install this plant,” said S M Kehar, secretary, SOCA.
