KOCHI:  Top chess players from India and Spain are pitting their wits against each other in a chess friendly as part of the ongoing Toyota Yaris La Liga World international preseason football tournament in Kochi between July 25 and 28 -- an event which will also be attended by footballers from Spanish top division outfit Girona FC.

The professional chess stars from Spain will include Grandmasters David Anton, Ivan Salgado, and Miguel Santos while women world no. 65 Sabrina Vega, no. 78 Anna Matnadze and Marta Garcia will form the women contingent. The team will be coached by David Martinez.

Meanwhile, the India contingent will be lead by Kerala’s very own Grandmaster S L Narayanan while Abhimanyu Puranik, Diptayan Ghosh, Harshit Raja, Soumya Swaminathan and Kiran Manish Mohanty will also feature for the local side under coach Vishal Sareen.

Spanish stars will play a friendly against Indians on Thursday followed by the two teams visiting the Rainbow Bridge at Marine Drive here. On Saturday, the Spaniards will play a game of chess against players from Girona FC, who finished 10th in last season’s La Liga.

Girona are scheduled to face A-League’s Melbourne City FC on Friday and Indian Super League club Kerala Blasters FC on Saturday in a first-of-its-kind tournament in the country. La Liga World is a project undertaken by the Spanish football league and the Spanish government to popularise Spanish culture and football in different parts of the world.
