Showtime has renewed the psychological drama series The Affair for a fifth and final season, according to Deadline.

The series, about the lingering aftermath of an extramarital affair, is currently in the midst of its fourth season. Co-creator Sarah Treem had previously intimated that Season 5 would be the series' last, and Showtime confirmed it on Thursday.

The Affair stars Dominic West and Ruth Wilson as the people who had the affair and Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson as their ex-spouses, telling each one's side of the story from their own perspective. In Season 4, each member of the quartet is dating someone new, and their new partners' perspectives are getting explored as well.

Does The Affair Really Need Another Mystery?

The cancellation is somewhat out of the ordinary for Showtime, which prefers to let its successful drama series run very long -- Shameless, for example, is entering its ninth season, and its most-watched series Dexter ran for eight -- but Treem told Variety before the Season 4 premiere, "My feeling is just that the story isn't quite over yet, but it also doesn't have that far to go. There's one more turn of the screw."

The Affair airs Sundays at 9/8c on Showtime.

(Full disclosure: TV Guide is owned by CBS, Showtime's parent company.)
