GHAZIABAD: A 45-year-old man was booked for allegedly attempting suicide at the district collectorate premises in Ghaziabad on Wednesday. The man, who was identified as Jagveer of Ikhla village, was later taken into police custody.

Jagveer attempted self-immolation by pouring a can of kerosene on him. But cops at the collectorate overpowered him immediately before he could set himself on fire. The FIR was registered at Kavi Nagar police station under Section 309 of IPC.

Police said Jagveer did not sustain any burns. Police later took him to Kavi Nagar police station.

“He told us that he was trying to take the extreme step after falling into financially tough times. He was frustrated for not having any stable source of income. He apparently needed money for medical expenses but was unable to raise a loan or sell his properties,” said local police outpost in-charge Gautam Singh.
