CHENNAI:It’s not uncommon for college students to opt for a summer internship. Students of a private college in Avadi have opted for a slightly offbeat internship this summer. As part of the Swachh Bharath Summer Internship Programme, around 60 students, split into six teams of 10 members each, go on rallies, conduct street plays and carry out door-to-door awareness campaigns.

On Wednesday, they took part in a rally at Ayapakkam village, organised by the Thiruvallur district collector, E Sundaravalli, to create awareness on various aspects of the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharath programme. “The students also identify areas where there is open defecation and inform the panchayat president,” said Srinivasan Rangan, assistant professor, Chennai National Arts and Science College. The areas for programmes and rallies are chosen by panchayat president.

Designed and coordinated by the Drinking Water and Sanitation Ministry, Human Resource Development Ministry, and Ministry of Youth Affairs, the experiential 100-hour internship programme was announced earlier this year, in a bid to encourage students to participate in the implementation of Swachh Bharath programmes. On Thursday, the students have scheduled a door-to-door awareness campaign in Ayapakkam.
