CHENNAI: There is a “slight decline” in the health of
DMK president and former
Tamil Nadu chief minister
M Karunanidhi due to age-related problems, a release from Kauvery Hospitals executive director Dr Aravind Selvaraj said.
“He is being treated for fever due to urinary tract infection with intravenous antibiotics and fluids. He is being monitored and treated round the clock by a team of medical and nursing professionals who are providing hospital-level care at his home,” the release said.
“Considering his medical condition, the treating team of doctors has strongly advised restriction of visitors,” it added.
On Wednesday, party working president
M K Stalin tweeted saying the 94-year-old was being treated for fever. On July 19, he was admitted to
Kauvery Hospital for an elective procedure to change tracheotomy tubes. By 4pm on the same day, he was discharged from the hospital after the tubes were changed.
In December 2016, the nonagenarian underwent a tracheostomy -- a procedure where a hole is made in the windpipe to optimise breathing. Doctors said the procedure helped him overcome breathing difficulties caused by a throat and lung infection.
In addition, he has a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) – a flexible tube put through the abdominal wall into the stomach. The feeding tubes allow nutrition. The tubes allow nutrition, fluids and or medications to be put directly into the stomach.
