NOIDA/GHAZIABAD: A 14-year-old girl was killed and two other minors were injured when a portion of their house fell on them due to rain in Shaheed Nagar area of Ghaziabad on Thursday evening. The girl has been identified as Anjali, a Class IX student.

“She lived with her father, mother, grandmother and families of three married brothers. The collapse took place around 6.30pm,” said circle officer, Sahibabad, R K Mishra.

According to sources, Anjali was standing on the terrace of their three-storey house in the evening when the roof suddenly collapsed and the girl fell to the floor below and got seriously injured. Two other children received minor injuries. They were taken to the hospital where the girl succumbed to her injuries. The entire house was also evacuated.

In another incident in Vijay Nagar’s Siddharth Vihar Extension, five of a family received injuries when a portion of their house collapsed in the morning. The house belongs to Aditya Prasad (38), a daily wager. Prasad’s house, located on street number 6, was completely inundated due to heavy rain. Around 10 am, stones slabs, which were used to construct the roof, came crashing down. While Prasad and his three sons received minor injuries, his wife Lata (30) suffered serious head injuries.

In Tilakram Colony in Loni, a woman and her son also received injuries when a portion of their house’s roof fell on them in the morning.

Meanwhile, in Mubarakpur area of Surajpur in Greater Noida, it was a narrow escape for the 10-member family of Ompal as their two-storey house collapsed right infront of their eyes immediately after they evacuted it.

The family consists of Ompal (62), wife Chandrawati (60), elder son Heeresh (32), Heeresh’s wife Neelam (29), their three children Kavya, Divya and Abhay along with the younger son Govind (26), his wife Shivani (24) and their 11-months-old son Aayu.

According to Ompal, around 6.30am, when he was getting ready to leave for his work, the wall which separates their house from a large empty plot collapsed. “We felt shaking as the wall collapsed. I immediately asked all my family members and neighbours to evacuate the house. Minutes later, my house collapsed right in front of my eyes,” he said.

“This boundary wall had collapsed many times in the past and had been reconstructed. Here water often gets accumulated on the empty plot a wall is not enough to stop it,” said Chanderpal Singh, who owns a three-storey house in front of the collapsed one.

Sources said the adjacent land is owned by Birla and an Institute of Medical Science is supposed to come up on the land. However, no construction has taken place so far.

Govind Sharma, who owns the house adjacent to Ompal’s, said would take his six-member family to a rented place because the life is at risk in the area.

Meanwhile, three buildings in Khasra No. 462 of Raipur village in Sector 126 were evacuated on Thursday evening by Noida Authority as these developed cracks due to digging in the basement of an adjacent building. Notice announcing ‘unsafe structure’ is being pasted on these buildings which had 13 students and four families living in them. Officer on special duty Rajesh Kumar Singh told TOI that while preliminary investigation revealed that a local builder had been constructing the building, action would be initiated against him in the coming days.

While 13 students and four families residing in these buildings have been shifted to neighbouring vacant buildings in the village, further investigations are underway.
