One fisherman was drowned, while another went missing when a traditional boat in which they went fishing overturned in high waves in the sea near Padukere village coming under the Malpe police station limits on Wednesday.
According to the police, a group of eight fishermen had left for fishing in the traditional boat from Padukere at around 7 a.m. But when the fishermen were some distance from the coast, the boat was hit by high waves and it overturned and all the fishermen in it were thrown into the sea.
Three of them were in the process of getting drowned, while the rest of the fishermen managed to pull Rajesh and Nitesh (28) from the waters and brought them ashore. They could not pull Nishanth (24) out of the water and he went missing. The rest of the fishermen immediately rushed Nitesh and Rajesh to the District Government Hospital in Ajjarkad here, where the doctors pronounced Nitesh dead.
Meanwhile, local fishermen and personnel of the Coastal Security Police tried to trace Nishanth but in vain. The search operations, which had been stopped in the evening, would be resumed tomorrow, said Madhu, Sub-Inspector of Police of Malpe Police Station.
A case of unnatural death has been registered at the Malpe Police Station, the police said.
