RAJKOT: Forest department officials arrested the farmer on charges of hunting a two-month-old
lion cub whose carcass were found stuffed in a cement bag from his farm in Khilvad village of Gir-Gadhda taluka on Sunday.
D T Vasavada chief conservator of forest (wildlife circle) Junagadh said, “We arrested the accused Arjan Baria from Jargali Bharadia area on Una-Gir
Gadhada Road and he is being interrogated.”
Forest department booked him under Wildlife Protection Act and invoked charges of hunting.
During the search operation at Baria’s home when he was absconding, the team of forest department recovered sharp-edged weapons like axe besides a net. Officials suspect that Baria is a habitual offender and he might have killed wild animals in the past too.
The post-mortem had revealed injuries on the cub’s head, below the jaw and in front leg.
