Huawei outshines Apple in the world's largest smartphone market

Apple and Samsung are two of the most popular and largest smartphone brands in the world with major market share and sales figures. Both are trying hard in their own ways to increase their sales and different markets, especially in China which is the largest smartphone market in the world. But both of these brands have a lot a competition in China given that it has several Chinese tech firms doing their best to outshine them. One such brand is Huawei. The brand might not be a big one in the US region but is leading the race on its home turf China, leaving giants like Apple and Samsung way behind.

According to the latest report from Canalys, Huawei was at the top spot as of April 2018 in China followed by other Chinese tech brands such as Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi. Also mentioned is that Apple stays in the top five list in China but has been classified as ‘Others’ in the list.

The report says that Huawei (including Honor) grew its smartphone market share by up to 27%, which is a record of having the biggest share for any smartphone vendor in China since Q2 2011. The company shipped as many as 28.5 million units. In addition, Honor is said to have been the largest smartphone brand in the Huawei Consumer Group.

While Oppo saw a minor growth of 3% as compared to Q2 2017, Vivo saw a major growth of up to 30%. On the contrary, Apple and Xiaomi’s market share fell. With the top five vendors accounting for around 90% share, it is becoming tougher for smaller vendors to crack the market, says the report.

Although China is being dominated by Huawei, the second largest smartphone market is being ruled by Samsung, according to Counterpoint report. Samsung was followed by Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and Honor in Q2 2018.
