As lorry strike continues; thereby affecting movement of goods

Petroleum tankers began moving through the city from 6 a.m. on Wednesday after the 24-hour strike called by Telangana Petroleum Tank Trucks Owners’ Association ended in the State. However, the truckers’ strike called by All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) continues.

“The strike is going on. Vehicles are not moving. We are hopeful that the government will listen to our demands and accept our proposals at the meeting tomorrow,” said N. Bhaskar Reddy, President of Telangana Lorry Owners’ Association (TLOA). The TLOA has 145 member associations across Telangana and has 230,000 lorries plying in the State.

The fate of the six-day old strike will be known on Thursday when AIMTC members are scheduled to meet government officials in New Delhi at 3 p.m.

In the main vegetable market at Bowenpally, traders said that movement of trucks carrying onions and potatoes from Karnataka and Maharashtra have been affected due to the strike. “The city has stocks for one more week, after that if the strike continues prices may go up,” said Rajywardhan Reddy, a trader. Movement of rice through the State has also been affected. “There is no price change as we have adequate stocks. Only if the stocks dip the prices might go up,” said a rice trader at Erragadda Rythu Bazaar.
