The government has declared Alappuzha and Kottayam districts flood-affected in view of the rare severity of the calamities caused by the southwest monsoon.
The declaration was issued by State Relief Commissioner P.H. Kurian based on the recommendation of the State executive committee of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) which concluded that both the districts were severely affected by excessive flooding and consequent disasters causing damage to property and disruption of normal life.
The notification makes farmers in the two districts eligible for crop insurance. The SDMA has sanctioned ₹2.44 crore for flood relief activities in Alappuzha district. An amount of ₹1.69 crore is earmarked for reconstruction of bunds and flood control by padasekhara committees, while ₹35 lakh will be utilised for repair and maintenance of the badly damaged Alappuzha-Changanassery road.
A pressnote issued by the Chief Minister’s Office said the government had allocated a total of ₹63.05 crore for flood relief work in all the districts. The highest amount of ₹19.92 crore is for Alappuzha district, followed by Malappuram with ₹8.91 crore and Palakkad ₹7.61 crore. The allocation for the other districts (in ₹ crore) is as follows: Thiruvananthapuram - 0.51, Kollam - 1.16, Pathanamthitta - 0.52, Idukki - 1.96, Ernakulam - 4.37, Thrissur - 1.42, Kottayam - 7.21, Kozhikode - 1.84, Wayanad - 1.82, Kannur - 3.81 and Kasaragod - 2.06.
