Monkeys bring electric pole down, elderly woman killed

MUZAFFARNAGAR: A 55-year-old woman was killed when a partially-damaged electricity pole fell on her after a few monkeys swung from it on Thursday. Five others, including three children, were also injured in the incident which took place at Ganga ghat in Shukratal area of Bhopa. The woman, Kusuma, was a resident of Bijnor district and used to sell vegetables in the ghat.
Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Vijay Kumar rushed to the spot after being informed about the incident. “We will write to the power department and initiate an inquiry into it. The family members of the deceased woman will be given Rs 2 lakh as compensation,” said SDM Kumar.

Brajesh Partap Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Bhopa police station, said, “The woman died on the spot. Her son and daughter-in-law were also hurt in the incident. Three kids, who were playing nearby, sustained injuries. They were rushed to the district hospital, while the body was sent for a postmortem.”
