A 78-year-old woman and her 31-year-old grandson were killed after their car got crushed between a Delhi Transport Corporation bus and a cluster bus on Tuesday morning in north-east Delhi’s Nand Nagri, the police said.
The accused cluster bus driver, Bir Bahadur, who was absconding has been arrested, they said.
The victims have been identified as Leelawati Garg and her grandson Amit Garg. Amit is survived by his wife Monika and their two minor daughters. Leelawati is survived by her husband, son Pawan Garg and his wife Rani.
The DTC bus driver has been questioned, the police said.
Leelawati and Amit, residents of AGCR Enclave, were on their way to a government office for some work around 11.30 a.m. when the incident happened, the police said.
As the victims were about to reach the venue, a speeding cluster bus hit the car from the right. Eyewitness Inderjeet, who runs a stall, said the DTC bus (route number 33) and the cluster bus (route number 165) came from Durgapuri side, while the victims’ car arrived from Tahirpur. The DTC bus stopped at the roundabout near the government office and the victims’ car came to a halt behind it, he said.
“The cluster bus was speeding and it hit the car, which in turn rammed the DTC bus,” Inderjeet said.
A case on charges of rash driving and causing death due to negligence has been registered, the police said.
Standing outside the mortuary at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Leelawati’s brother Hukum Chand Gupta (71) said she and Amit died on the spot.
‘Bleeding profusely’
“They were bleeding profusely...Amit had sustained a head injury,” Mr. Gupta said.
An officer said locals helped the police remove the bodies from the crushed vehicle. “The residents were asked to bring a hammer and an axe to cut open the car’s doors and windows to remove the bodies,” he said.
The police said the Delhi Disaster Management Authority was informed about the incident but they arrived at the spot very late and hence the help of locals was sought.
The family said Amit was a fashion design graduate and worked with his father, who has a garment’s business on Subhash Road.
“Amit and his father took care of his bedridden grandfather Basant Lal Garg. In fact, his parents celebrated their anniversary on July 5,” a family member said.
