HYDERABAD: Tortured by an abusive kafil (employer), a woman from Hyderabad who escaped from his clutches in Saudi Arabia has finally reached home and asked the police to take action against the agents who trafficked her.

Police have said that they have recorded Safora Begum's statement and will initiate action against the people involved.

Safora Begum has thanked Union minister for external affairs Sushma Swaraj for aiding her return to India.

TOI had reported about Safora Begum’s plight in Saudi Arabia in January 2018. Begum had been trafficked to Saudi Arabia on June 2, 2017 after being put from Hyderabad.

Promised a lab technician’s job, Begum was made to work as a housemaid. She eventually fled the kafil's house and took refuge at the Indian embassy’s centre in Damam.

Begum's family lodged a complaint with the Asifnagar police following which an FIR was registered.

Safora Begum’s mother Rayeesa Begum, a resident of Muradnagar, informed the police that an agent, Shanawaj Jameel, had sent Safora to Saudi promising that 1,200 Saudi Riyals would be paid to her as salary. However, she was paid just 550 riyals per month. Moreover, the kafil was making her work in four houses. She alleged that the agent had been given Rs 2.3 lakh by the kafil. To send her back to India, the kafil was demanding Rs 1.5 lakh from her.
