The State Commission for Minorities has directed the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) to address drinking water shortage at Mattancherry. It also directed the Kochi Corporation to evolve measures for the management of municipal waste in the area.
Commission chairman P.K. Haneefa directed the KWA and the civic body to take steps and report back after two months. The commission issued the directive on a petition filed by the office-bearers of the Institute for Social Reformation and Amity.
The petitioners had submitted that septage was regularly being dumped into drains in the area. Also, the drains are not being cleaned on time, and there exists the high risk of outbreak of diseases, they said. They also pointed out that a large number of minority community members were living in the area.
Meanwhile, corporation officials submitted before the commission that all drains in the region had been cleaned up as part of the pre-monsoon preparedness programme.
The commission directed the KWA to take measures for the completion of the rider water supply line project from Karuvelippadi to Koovappadam. It considered as many as 20 complaints during the sitting held on Wednesday.
The next sitting of the panel will be held on August 12 at the Aluva Guest House.
