Marked improvement in evaluation, claims CBSE

NEW DELHI: Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) claimed on Wednesday that despite 4,362 instances — as reported by TOI on July 25 — of increase in the classes X and XII final exam marks after re-evaluation, there had been marked improvement in the evaluation process. Out of the 28 lakh students and 1.5 crore copies, the board said, the increase percentage has been just 0.075%.

According to a board statement, it will further strengthen the evaluation system with the training of teachers and evaluators and by increasing technological interventions for overall improvement. Strict action has been initiated against 214 teachers for callous evaluation, it added.

Of the 28 lakh candidates in classes X and XII board exams, 66,876 applicants had opted for the first-stage verification process. Out of them, marks were changed in only 4,632 cases, which is 6.9% of the total, said CBSE.

According to the board, the number would have been even lower had it continued with the policy of not granting any marks in case of a change ranging from one to five marks. “It is an accepted international norm that there will be 5-7% differences in evaluation between one evaluator and another,” the statement said. However, CBSE allowed the change this year in compliance with a 2017 order of the Delhi high court.

In 3,200 of the 4,632 cases, the increase was in the range of 1-5 marks, “which was considered zero error by the board earlier”, according to the CBSE statement.

The re-evaluation involves three steps — verification of marks, obtaining photocopy of evaluated answer books and re-evaluation of answer books. These three steps are interlinked and have to be complied by a student for getting his answer sheets re-evaluated.
