New Delhi: A fetus was discovered in the lavatory of an
Air Asia flight which landed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport from Imphal on Wednesday. The fetus was discovered during the journey by a passenger, following which the cabin crew was alerted.
The incident occurred on Air Asia’s I5-784 flight which arrived at Delhi this afternoon via Imphal and Guwahati. Police say the premature fetus is said to have been delivered during the flight and the passenger likely boarded the plane in Guwahati.
“On 25/07/18, an information was received from the Air Asia flight manager that during the journey, a fetus was discovered in the lavatory. The flight I5-784 Imphal-Guwahati-Delhi flight arrived at IGI’s T-3 and boarding gate number 49. We are carrying out further investigation to determine who the passenger may be,” said a senior police official.
An Air Asia spokesperson confirmed the incident and said that passengers were asked to stay back, following which the suspect was identified.
“A new born infant was found lifeless and abandoned in one of the lavatories when the aircraft was being prepared for landing. Delhi Police were alerted and a doctor from the medical team at Delhi International Airport confirmed that the baby had been delivered onboard,” said the spokesperson.
“A suspect has been held back by police for further investigation. The suspect was identified on questioning of all female passengers onboard. The matter has been reported to DGCA and the airline’s staff are attending to other guests and cooperating with Delhi Police. We will be assisting in the investigation and cooperating with all concerned agencies. AirAsia India would like to apologise to all guests experiencing disruptions in their flight schedule,” the spokesperson added.
