CHENNAI:After City Express reported about the Pallavaram Municipality constructing a road on a canal in Chromepet, the Public Works Department (PWD) on Tuesday began removing the rubble which the Municipality had used to form the road.

Much to the relief of residents, a Poclain was used to remove rubble. The remnants of the huts which had been demolished in April were also removed. “We are ensuring the obstruction is removed at the earliest and will make sure this kind of incidents don’t happen again,” said a senior PWD official, explaining how the Pallavaram Municipality has set a bad example to the public by encroaching a water channel.

The Pallavaram Municipality had been building the road on a section of the canal to connect Kattabomman Street and Shanti Nagar Second Main Road. Locals said that this was being done so that people staying in residential areas in Chromepet had easy access to shopping complexes on the GST Road.

A special officer, who was designated to ensure removal of encroachments in the southern districts after the previous monsoon, welcomed the move. While around 12 huts were removed in April, certain sections of compound walls marked for demolition still remain intact. “We will remove these abutting encroachments soon,” said a PWD official.
