He posed as DGP office employee

The city police on Tuesday launched a manhunt for a person who duped over half a dozen people to the tune of ₹3 lakh at Nunna in the guise of a police constable working in the office of the Director General of Police.

The accused, Ashok, who always used to be seen in a safari suit and black goggles by locals, reportedly stopped showing up in the locality for more than a month, and his ‘fraudulent deeds’ came to light when one of his victims lodged a complaint with the Nunna police on Monday.

On Tuesday, six other victims approached the police complaining that the accused had taken money from them on the pretext of doing official favours and recommendations using his association with the DGP’s office.

Nunna inspector M.V. Durga Rao said that the accused had rented a portion in the house of Appala Raju, a septuagenarian. After befriending Mr. Raju, the accused had presented himself to the local people as a head constable with influence in the police headquarters and also the son-in-law of Mr. Raju, and earned their trust.

He took ₹1.5 lakh from a person in the locality promising a job recommendation and ₹50,000 each from two others and ₹10,000 each from four others in the neighbourhood, Mr. Rao said. As he was not seen for over a month, those who gave him the money approached the police.
