BENGALURU: Yeshwantpur police informed the high court that N
Naraismha Murthy, an RTI
activist, was arrested on Tuesday over reported controversial remarks during a debate on a TV channel. Murthy allegedly spoke derogatively of the ‘nama’ (signage on the forehead) of Lord Ventakeshwara.
Police filed their statement before Justice
Aravind Kumar, who took it on record and disposed of a petition filed by BM Suresh. When the case came up for hearing in the morning, the judge pulled up police for their inaction despite registration of a complaint some three months ago. Justice Kumar also warned that the police officer concerned would be suspended if no action was taken.
In his complaint, Suresh claimed that at 7.30 pm on April 27, 2018, Narasimha Murthy made the remark during a panel discussion on a private TV channel. A case was filed against him under sections 295A and 298 of IPC. Suresh claimed that instead of acting on the complaint, police escorted Narasimha Murthy from the studio. He said a representation submitted to the police commissioner on April 30 yielded no result. Murthy was produced before a magistrate’s court and released on bail.
