DU likely to come up with 7th cut-off list

In order to make its admission figures proportionate in tune with the reservation policy and statutory guidelines, the Delhi University (DU) is likely to come up with seventh cut-off for admission to its merit based Undergraduate (UG) courses, confirmed a varsity official. Also, the seventh cut-off is mandated to fill the vacant seats of various categories in courses at DU colleges against cancellations.

The seventh cut-off may come within 4-5 days as the university officials are holding marathon meetings for it. It is generally observed that in cut-off based admissions, colleges often exceed their sanctioned strength in various courses, admitting students over and above it. The admissions, made above the sanctioned strength, create an imbalance in the overall figures which no more comply with the reservation norms. It is mainly in the backdrop of this problem that the university will come up with seventh cut-off so as to make total number of admissions compatible with the reservation norms.

Also in the wake of fact that many students move to other universities, cancelling their admissions in DU, leaving their seat vacant. In addition to it, even those students who sail through DU's entrance based undergraduate courses prefer moving to these courses leaving their seat vacant in merit based undergraduate courses.

DU had already come up with six cut-offs against only five “realistic” cut-offs as decided earlier for admissions to the merit based undergraduate courses. In the wake of cancellations and for compliance of reservation policy, these extra cut-offs seems indispensible.

At DU, twenty two and half percent of the total numbers of seats  are reserved for applicants belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). Out of which 15 percent is for the Scheduled Caste (SC) and seven and half percent for Scheduled Tribes (ST), interchangeable, if necessary). It is a statutory obligation on the part of Colleges to fill all seats reserved for Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe applicants. While seventy seven percent of the seats are reserved for the applicant's belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC).

University rules also states that SC/ST applicants who get admission under open merit (unreserved) shall not be included in the reserved quota.

However, seats in popular courses in sought after DU colleges in north campus, have already been filled up. Seventh cut-off will offer little hope for those looking forward to take admission in courses and colleges, a DU official said.
