LUDHIANA: An inmate tried to commit suicide by slitting his throat with a blade at Ludhiana Central
Jail on Monday evening. The jail authorities said it was the seventh time in the past two years that Vijay Kumar Sonu attacked himself on the prison premises.
Sonu, 28, an undertrial in snatching and pick-pocketing cases, has been doing time for the past two years.
The jail superintendent, Shamsher Singh Boparai, said, “There have been six other instances when Sonu injured himself with a blade in the jail. But this time, he tried to slash his throat.”
As other inmates raised the alarm, the jail authorities rushed to his barrack number 5 and took the injured to hospital.
“He did not say anything when we asked him the reason for his taking the step. The jail authorities have written to Division 7 police to lodge an attempt to suicide case against him,” Boparai added.
About availability of blades in the prison, the jail superintendent said, “Inmates use blades for shaving.”
The police are yet to register an FIR.
