MUMBAI: Bombay high court on Wednesday directed Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's technical advisory committee (TAC) to inspect the 150-year-old
Esplanade Mansion at Kala Ghoda.
A bench of Justices Ranjit More and Anuja Prabhudessai directed that TAC shall submit a report to it on August 1. The bench also directed that considering the urgency, in the meantime, the landlord shall submit an online proposal to
BMC to carry out repairs.
The court heard petition by Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (
MHADA) to pull down the structure following the July 15 incident when balconies from three floors collapsed crashing on a taxi parked on the road. It also heard petitions by the tenants and landlord for a direction to have the building repaired.
The court was told in 2010 the building was certified by MHADA as repairable. But the judges were of the opinion that considering the condition of the building it is necessary to be inspected afresh by experts. They directed the TAC to inspect the building within a week from today.
