According to Ayurveda, belly fat is the result of an increase in kapha dosha. If your lifestyle is devoid of exercise, you consume unhealthy diet and often have tired days, it could lead to increase in belly fat. Eating fatty foods, sweets and desserts can also increase kapha in the body. Obesity is a disorder of the fat tissue and metabolism. When you’re obese, the fat tissues increase and block all the channels in the digestive system. This leads to more weight gain.

So, how does one remedy this with ayurveda? While it is not easy to lose weight and cut out belly fat overnight, there are certain ingredients that are recommended by ayurveda that may help get the desired results.

Fenugreek (methi) seeds: Fenugreek seeds are loaded with numerous nutrients. It has galactomanna, a water soluble component which helps curb craving and keep you satiated. It also helps increase metabolic rate of the body. Just roast some methi seeds, crush in a mortar and pestle to make fine powder. Have this with some water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. You can even soak some overnight and chew on them in the morning on an empty stomach.

Guggul: This herbal remedy has been a part of ayurveda for centuries. Guggul has plant sterol known as guggulsterone which promotes weight loss. It is also a natural cholesterol lowering herb. Guggul tea can be very effective.

Vijaysar: This deciduous tree’s bark is used in ayurveda to manage diabetes and obesity. It also has fat reducing properties. The bark can also help you get a healthy digestive system. You can add vijaysar to your herbal tea to get desired results.

Triphala: This power powder helps eliminate toxins and improves digestion. Triphala is an ancient preparation made using dried amla, haritaki and bibhitaki. This churn (powder) is usually taken with hot water, at least two hours after dinner and half an hour before breakfast.

Punarnava: This is one of the most effective herbs for weight loss. It has diuretic properties which keeps the kidney and urinary bladded functioning well. It also helps reduce water retention, which can further help shed kilos.
