Violations make Delhi road unsafe

The roads in the national Capital have become more unsafe for Delhiites as there is steep rise in the traffic violations including dangerous driving, drunken driving and over speeding of  vehicles which is the major cause of fatal accidents. A total of 35,08,086 'Challans' have been issued in 2018 (Upto June 30) while in 2017, they were 31.71 lakh.

The Delhi Traffic Police fines 20,000 people for violating the road safety rules. As per the data shared by the Delhi Traffic Police shows an increase in the challans issued for Dangerous driving to 5,019 in 2018 whereas it was 1,29,617 challans have been issued in 2017. A total number of 78,407 challans were issued against drunken driving this year, while in 2017 it was 65,467.

The drunken driving increasing specially during the festivals seasons such as in the Holi, before Diwali, Christmas and New Year eve. Also, the officials on condition of anonymity also said that the drunken driving also increases during the wedding season starts from October to February.

Delhi Traffic Police is marinating a close watch on specific locations especially the areas popular for pubs, clubs, malls and party oriented places . Connaught Place, Saket, Hauz Khas, Vasant kunj DLF mall are some of the areas where triple riders and drunk drivers  are often caught, a traffic police official said.

“The violations on the road are very high during the weekends especially in the night time. We have deployed more traffic police in the night time than the peak hours. Because in the night time and in the weekends, the riders and drivers feel that they can escape and violate the rules by jumping the red light signals, over speeding of the vehicles triple riding without helmets,” said  Alok Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police ( Traffic).

Further, a large number of challans were issued for jumping Red light signals, riding without helmets and triple riding. A total of 1, 26,167 challans were issued for jumping red lights in 2018 (up to June 15), while it was 1, 11, 769 last year. Further, around 6,99,728 two wheeler and pillion riders were fined for not wearing helmets this year, witnessing an increase of 29,897 challans as compared to the last year, Kumar said.

 “We have deployed traffic personnel especially in the areas where malls, pubs and lounge exists because these are the places where people do party and drive after drinking without caring for their own life as well as the other innocent pedestrians,” added the Kumar.

As compared to the last year , the triple riding also increased in 2018 as the Traffic Police has issued 1,16,963 challans in 2018 whereas in 2017 it was 98,573. Moreover, lakhs of people have also fined for not wearing seat belts this year, 394192 were fined this year while last year it was less by seven percent as 3,25,568 challans were issued in 2017.

Also, the violation has touched 60 percent within six month as compared to the last year. A total of 60,10,772 challans were issued by the Delhi Traffic Police in 2017, with the police collecting around 94.25 crore.
