Coimbatore: The city police on Tuesday arrested a four- member gang that has been supplying opioid drugs to addicts in Coimbatore. Police also seized six bottles of pethidine hydrochloride and four bottles of diazepam injections from them.
The arrested were identified as D Joy Immanuel, a native of Bengaluru, Mohammed Shikas of Saibaba Colony, Jilbykhan Ali of Kuniyamuthur and Mohammed Anaf of Ukkadam. “Joy Immanuel is the leader of the gang. He used to procure opioids from some medical shops at a cheap rate and sell them at a high rate. The other three were addicted to drugs and also used to sell them to other addicts,” a police officer said.
The gang membes were booked under Sections 8 (c ) read with 22 (b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. They were produced at the judicial magistrate court -II on Tuesday evening and the court remanded them in judicial custody till August 7.
M Abdul Rahman of Kottaimedu, a drug addict and supplier, who was remanded in judicial custody in April 2018, has links with Joy Immanuel, police sources said.
