NAVI MUMBAI: On Monday night, Ranchhod Kumawat, a grocer, was reaching out to get an item from a partially-open
drawer at his
Kharghar shop in Sector 35, when he made an unexpected discovery: A 2ft-long Russell’s viper slithering inside. “I slammed the drawer shut and called up the NGO, Snakes Awareness Association,” said Kumawat.
“The viper must have come from a nearby sewer. During monsoon, newborn and young Russell’s vipers are know to explore their territories and also enter human habitats,” said Raghunath Jadhav from the NGO. “After informing the forest officials, we have released the rescued
snake in a safe forested area.”
Jadhav said last week, they had rescued another Russell’s viper from a grocery shop in Sector 5. “The snake was inside an open jar that stored sugar. It was later released in the wild,” he added.
