Edavela Babu defends move to reinstate Dileep

A group of 300 women film practitioners from across the country, who had earlier condemned the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA)’s decision to reinstate actor Dileep, an accused in a case of sexual assault on an actor, has again written to AMMA criticising its insensitivity in defending the decision to reinstate the actor.

AMMA general secretary Edavela Babu had in a recent reply to the women film practitioners said that Dileep can be dismissed only after he was found guilty by a court.

In their response, which was released at the Kairali theatre on Monday during the IDSFFK, the women film practitioners said that by reinstating him, it appears as if AMMA is supporting him, instead of standing by the woman member who was assaulted.

“The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal Act of 2013) clearly states that the complainant has the right to ask for suspension of the accused until the inquiry is completed,” said the statement.

Redressal committee

The statement also questioned AMMA on the steps it is taking to form the complaints and redressal committee.

“We expect you to form a credible complaints committee that is trained by experts on how to conduct a fair and impartial inquiry,” said the statement.
