NEW DELHI: Weeks after being rescued from the house in Burari where 11 members of the
Bhatia family were found dead, Tommy, their six-year-old pet dog, died of a heart attack on Sunday at an animal shelter in Noida.
The dog was the only ‘survivor’ from the house and was found chained on the terrace with extremely high fever due to dehydration and starvation. Tommy, an Indian pitbull mixed breed, was taken in by a Noida-based animal shelter for treatment, and experts said he was recovering. Sanjay Mohapatra, an animal activist who had taken the dog to the shelter, said he seemed fine in the morning and was even taken for a walk. But when Tommy returned from his walk, he collapsed and did not recover from the cardiac arrest.
“He had even gained weight since we first saw him. His skin infection was also gone. This came as a shock to us. The team tried to revive him, but within five minutes he was declared dead,” said Mohapatra . The dog was extremely aggressive when he first arrived at the shelter. Mohapatra said the aggression was primarily due to trauma and shock.
