The Medeiros Team of Hope is planning its last fundraiser for the year for the American Cancer Society "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" as it will host a cookout/end of summer event from 1-6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18. at Sociedade Filarmonica Sao Joao, a Portuguese club, 845 Washington St., Stoughton.

Food for sale will include hamburgers, hot dogs, Portuguese chourico sandwiches, fries, soda, coffee and donuts. Activities will include baby animal petting zoo (2-3:30 p.m.), caricatures artist (3-5 p.m.), giant block game (its like Jenga), ducks in the pond, raffles and gift baskets. No admission charge, but need to purchase tickets to play activities.

The team is comprised of five sisters and one brother, their spouses and children. Two sisters are breast cancer survivors. Helena was 35 and Ana 37 when they were diagnosed.

The family started walking as individuals in 2001, and formed Medeiros Team of of Hope in 2006. That’s when the family and team members started doing fundraisers; the first big fundraiser was a dinner dance with raffles and auction. That year her team raised more than $23,000.

The team include Lucy Luis, 54, of Stoughton; Connie Arruda, 58, lives in West Bridgewater; sister Helena DaCosta, 56, whose husband was killed by a drunk driver back in 2009, lives in Sarasota, Florida; Maria (Goretti) Goulart, 55, lives in Shirley; Ana Costa, 51, lives in Malden; and brother Steve Medeiros, 40, lives in Melrose.
