PATNA: Commercial vehicles, including autos, e-rickshaws, taxis and buses, will go off the roads in Bihar on August 7 in protest against the Motor Vehicle Act (amendments) Bill of 2017.

After a meeting of the Bihar Motor Transport Federation (BMTF) and All India Road Transport Workers' Federation in Patna on Tuesday, their functionaries said it would be complete ‘chakka jam’ on August 7. Representatives of the Bihar Rajya Minibus Owners’ Association and e-rickshaw and drivers’ union also participated in the meeting.

BMTF president Uday Shankar Prasad Singh told this reporter the amendments Bill, once it is passed, would cause hardship to petty drivers and transporters. “The amendments envisage hefty penalties for traffic offences with the fine now doubled,” he said.

The strike is also aimed at opposing increase in fuel prices and third party insurance premium, among other things, said Sahil Sinha, general secretary of the Bihar Rajya Minibus Owners’ Association.

The Motor Vehicle Act (amendments) Bill of 2017 has been passed by the Lok Sabha and is awaiting approval by the Rajya Sabha.
