Coimbatore: More than a month after two miscreants snatched a gold chain weighing nine sovereigns from the wife of district munsif, the Sulur police on Tuesday night arrested the duo and recovered 14 sovereigns gold from them. The two have confessed to have involved in another chain snatching incident reported in the Chettipalayam police station limits.
According to police, chain was snatched from the district munsif K Selvapandi’s wife S Maheswari, 40, when they were returning home on a scooter after visiting a shopping mall located on Avinashi Road on June 10.
“When they neared Sulur lake, two unidentified persons started to follow them on a motorcycle. They then snatched the gold chain from Maheswari and sped away,” an investigation official said.
Based on Maheswari’s complaint, the Sulur police registered a case. But there wasn’t any lead in the case until Tuesday night, when they arrested Kadar Basha, 22, of Malumichampatti and Manikandan, 19, of Ganeshapuram near Podanur, based on a tip.
Kadar Basha, the official said, was employed with two-wheeler showroom, while Manikandan was a habitual offender who used to roam with chain snatchers at Podanur. “The duo confessed that they had snatched the chain from the district munsif’s wife and we have recovered the chain from them,” the investigation official said.
During the interrogation, the two also confessed that were involved in another chain snatching case. “They had snatched a gold chain weighing five sovereigns from a school teacher, identified as Paula Gnanamalar of Chettipalayam, in June. We have recovered that chain also,” the official said.
The Sulur police would produce the two before the judicial magistrate court on Wednesday. The duo are likely to be remanded in judicial custody.
