Assures of steps to prevent such incidents in the future

Commissioner of Police A.K. Viswanathan on Monday visited the 22-year-old youth who faced police excesses a few days ago.

The youth, Mohammed Haroon Sait, had bruises and fractures as police personnel manhandled him during night rounds near Spur Tank Road, Chetpet.

In his Facebook post, he claimed that during vehicle checks, the sub-inspector of police M.H. Ilayaraja and other personnel slapped him as he did not produce original of documents and refused to pay ₹300 as they demanded. He also posted that they beat him up with lathis and badly treated him in the police station and that his father rescued him later. His post went viral. On a complaint lodged by Mr. Sait, a departmental proceeding was initiated against the SI and he was placed under suspension on Sunday.

Mr. Viswanathan went to Mr. Sait’s house and enquired about his health. He assured that all steps would be taken to ensure such incidents do not occur in future.

SHRC summons SI

The State Human Rights Commission on Monday summoned Inspector Ilayaraja to appear before it on August 8. The SHRC took suo motu cognisance of a media report.
