Tamil Nadu reduces intake of water

The water level in the Mullaperiyar dam is holding steady at 135.2 ft for the past three days even though Tamil Nadu has reduced the intake of water from 2,300 cubic feet (cft) per second to 2,000 cft per second.

The inflow into the dam on Tuesday was 1,983.4 cft per second.

The water from the Mullaperiyar dam is stored in the Vaigai dam in Theni district of Tamil Nadu and is being used for irrigation in five districts of Tamil Nadu in addition to the drinking water purpose there.

For the past two consecutive seasons, vast areas in the five districts were left uncultivated due to the shortage of water.

The water level in the Idukki reservoir has been on rise at the level of one foot for the past two days reaching it 2,386.54 ft on Tuesday. This was 81.15% of the total capacity of the dam.

Power generation

The power generation at the Moolamattom Power House of Idukki dam was increased to 10.197 mu on Tuesday.

There was a rainfall of 85 mm on the catchment area as recorded on Tuesday.

If all the generators were functioning at Moolamattom, a total of 18.4 mu of power could be produced there.
