Couple die as band aid to seal leakage leads to roof collapse

A couple were crushed to death and their three children sustained severe injuries after the roof of their house collapsed in Hari Vihar locality in Dwarka in Delhi past midnight on Monday.

The family members were pulled out of the debris and taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where Sunil (40) and Rachna (40) were declared brought dead. However, their sons Vaibhav (19), Gulshan (16) and daughter Gungun (9) are out of danger.

Sunil, who worked in a footwear factory in Piragarhi, had bought the 30 square yard one bedroom house 20 years ago. The roof collapsed after the family put a layer of bricks on the roof to stop water leakage last year, police said.

Sunil and Rachna with their daughter Gungun were sleeping on the floor, while their sons were sleeping on the bed. Around 1 am, the roof collapsed burying them in debris. Gungun was saved because she was sleeping in between her parents, but was seriously hurt, their neighbours said.
