PM Modi gifts 200 cows to villagers in Rwanda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today presented 200 cows to villagers of Rweru Model Village as part of Girinka programme, a social protection scheme initiated by the Rwandan government.

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame was also present on the occasion. The Prime Minister congratulated the Rwandan President on this unique initiative which has benefited more than 3.5 lakh families.

He said, like India where the cow is considered sacred, people of Rwanda also consider the cow an integral part of its economy. Mr Modi also paid homage at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. The memorial has been built to honour over 2.5 lakh people killed in the ethnic conflicts in the country in 1994.

India and Rwanda signed eight agreements in various fields including Defence, Trade and Agriculture following delegation-level talks between Mr Modi and Mr Kagame last night. India also extended two Lines of Credit of 100 million US dollars each for development of industrial parks and Kigali Special Economic Zone, and for three agricultural projects in Rwanda.

Addressing a joint press conference, Mr Modi said, India will soon open a High Commission in Rwanda which will not only establish communication between the governments of the two countries but also enable facilities for consular, passport and visa.

In his remarks, Rwandan President said, Mr Modi’s visit represents a milestone between the long-standing friendship and co-operation between the two countries.

Later, addressing the Indian community, Mr Modi said, the Indian diaspora is making a mark all over the world and they are the country’s Ambassadors.

The Prime Minister reached Rwanda’s capital Kigali yesterday on a two-day visit to the country.

On the last leg of his five-day visit to Africa, Mr Modi will attend 10th BRICS Summit at Johannesburg in South Africa.

PM Modi reaches Uganda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Uganda on the second leg of his three-African nations tour after concluding his Rwanda visit.

It is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in over 20 years. During his two-day stay in Ugandan capital Kampala, Mr Modi will hold talks with the country’s leadership, and deliver the keynote address at the Ugandan Parliament, the first Indian Prime Minister to do so.
