Flight BA864 reported technical issues immediately after departure from Heathrow above Essex. The Airbus A320 circled over Essex and south-east London prior to landing back at Heathrow.
This emergency comes as a passenger plane from London Heathrow circled over the UK for two hours after a suspected incident over the weekend.
A flight of United to Chicago circled over 13 times over Wales at 21,000 feet on Saturday afternoon after departing from Heathrow. The UA959 flight was diverting back to Heathrow as it made the circuits over Swansea for two hours.
It was thought that the Boeing 767 was constantly circling to burn off fuel before it returned to London.
The jet that departed at 3.10 p.m. finally left the holding pattern at 5.30 p.m. before descending towards the city. Thereafter it landed safely around 6 p.m. before taxing to the gate, reportedly being followed by emergency vehicles.
It was reported that this incident might have been a technical issue on board the plane.
Heathrow has come under fire of late for a fire alarm that sparked long delays and an IT outage by British Airways that grounded all its jets. It all comes as the airport faced one of its busiest weekends after schools across the nation broke up for the summer and Brits started their getaways.
