Manchester United were held to another draw as they failed to break San Jose Earthquakes down in Santa Clara.
Here, Samuel Luckhurst gives his verdict how Jose Mourinho’s side performed .
Joel Pereira
Had very little to do during a serene 45 minutes in the sun when he could have kept goal in a deckchair. 6
Antonio Valencia
Had to come off after seven minutes due to what looked like a calf problem. 5
Chris Smalling
Rarely troubled but there was a moment of hesitancy in his latest outing with Eric Bailly. 5
Eric Bailly
Should have converted Alexis Sanchez’s early free-kick but hit the underside of the crossbar. Defensively sound. 6
Luke Shaw
The only one of the back four who stayed on beyond the pause. Struggled against Nick Lima, who nutmegged him before being upended. 6
Andreas Pereira
Tidy in possession and usually tried to play the ball forwards. Has an outside chance of starting in the Premier League opener against Leicester on August 10. 7
Ander Herrera
Wasteful in possession and attacks often broke down with the ball at his feet. Should not be guaranteed a starting role against Leicester, on the evidence so far. 5
James Garner
Had a steady 45 minutes where he did little wrong and was risk-aversive on the ball. Replaced by Scott McTominay at the pause. 6

Tahith Chong
Too over-elaborate and looked as physically ‘fragile’ as Mourinho suggested in midweek. There was some encouraging telepathy in attack, though. 5
Alexis Sanchez
Looked up for it and on it from kick-off. Combatant and creative throughout, he was United’s best player. 7
Anthony Martial
Looked apathetic throughout and at one stage switched roles with Sanchez, who also rebuked Martial for making the wrong run after one attack. 4

Subs
Matteo Darmian
Crossed as poorly as Valencia . 5
Lee Grant
Kept capably and guided teammates professionally. 7
Axel Tuanzebe
Calm alongside Fosu-Mensah in the second period. 7
Timothy Fosu-Mensah
Magnificent goal-line clearance to deny Vako. 7
Scott McTominay
Made little impact. 5
Juan Mata
On the fringes. 5
Mason Greenwood
Lively but saw little of the ball. 5
Demetri Mitchell
Calm and disciplined. 5
Angel Gomes
Saw little of the ball. 5
