PANAJI: Though the rainfall has been largely moderate during the last week, the seasonal total almost touched the 70-inch mark on Sunday, with nearly 65% of the rainfall quota achieved in less than two months.
The India meteorological centre (IMD), Panaji, has recorded a total of 1,767.1 (69.5 inches) of rainfall so far while 1,683.3mm (66.2 inches) is considered normal.

The surplus has shrunk to just 5%, but this is within the normal range.

During the last 24 hours till Sunday morning, Ponda received the highest rainfall of 36.8mm, Valpoi 34.2mm, Dabolim 29.2mm, Sakhali 27.6mm, Sanguem 21.5mm, Canacona 204mm and other centres on a lesser scale. Figures of two centres were not available.

The rainfall has been intermittent but the spells have been brief. While the IMD, Panaji, had forecast heavy rainfall in isolated places for about four days, it has been mostly moderate so far. “We are expecting a slight increase due to the depression and heavy rainfall is expected in isolated places from Sunday night,” Rahul M, scientist, IMD, Panaji said.

IMD has issued a warning regarding high waves in the range of 3.5m to 4.3m during the last couple of days till 11.30pm on Sunday along the Goa coast.

Winds were blowing in westerly to southwesterly direction with a speed of 45 to 55kmph, temporarily reaching 60kmph in gusts or squall. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for the next five days. The monsoon fishing ban ends in eight days.
