PUNE: The irrigation department officials, who said the Khadkwasla dam was full on Sunday, started discharging water at 4,200 cusecs.
“The catchment areas of the dams had subdued rainfall earlier this week. So the water discharge was stopped. But rainfall activity has increased in the last few days. The water in the dam is high. Hence, we decided to release more water,” an irrigation official said.
If there is heavy rainfall in the catchment areas, the discharge will increase further, they added.
The irrigation department said Panshet had more than 97% of water. The other two dams, Temghar and Varasgaon, were about 69% full.
The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast for the city has predicted a decrease in the rainfall. IMD officials said the weather conditions instrumental in causing rainfall around
Maharashtra and nearby areas have weakened and will adversely impact the quantum of rain.
“The feeble off-shore trough at mean sea level from south Gujarat coast to north Kerala coast has become less marked. The cyclonic circulations over south Gujarat and neighbourhood and over east Uttar Pradesh have become less marked,” the officials said.
