Coimbatore: Water was released from the Aliyar reservoir on Saturday and Sunday. An official said 600 cubic feet per second (cusecs) water was released from the dam on Sunday evening and around 500cusecs on Saturday night.
“We have been releasing surplus water from the reservoir as and when we get it,” the official, who didn’t want to be named, said. The surplus water will reach Aliyar and old irrigation areas in Pollachi. “Water is not being released specifically for irrigation, but even if people use it for the same, excess water will flow in the river.”

The water level in the reservoir, meanwhile, stood at 116.3ft against its capacity of 120ft. On Saturday, 300cusecs water was released through the mini power house and another 200cusecs through the Pollachi Canal. Water from the Aliyar reservoir benefits farmers in Coimbatore, Erode and Palakkad in Kerala.
