McLaren 720S Hits 202 MPH On The Autobahn Without Breaking A Sweat

McLaren is still a relative newcomer in the world of supercars and hypercars, but its new models continue to provide blistering performance that puts rivals from Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porsche on notice.

There’s no better example of this than the 720S. Unveiled roughly 16 months ago, the British supercar is priced against the Ferrari 488 GTB and Lamborghini Huracan, but outperforms both by a considerable margin.

Given enough room, McLaren says the 720S can accelerate through to an impressive 212 mph (341 km/h). While the video below doesn’t show the 720S maxing out, it does get pretty close, exceeding the 200 mph (320 km/h) barrier and briefly reaching 202 mph (325 km/h). The POV camera position makes it feel like you’re in the car, so the video is well worth a watch.

What is perhaps most interesting about the clip is not simply the max speed the supercar hits. Instead, it is the way the 720S accelerates from roughly 93 mph (150 km/h) to 155 mph (250 km/h) at a truly frightening pace, seemingly bending time and space on its way to a speed most production cars can’t even dream of.

The secret to the car’s performance lies in its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. McLaren’s official word is that it produces 710 hp. However, dyno runs of the car suggest that it may deliver closer to 800 hp at the crankshaft, a figure which lifts the car’s from the likes of the 488 GTB into the territory of the Ferrari 812 Superfast and Lamborghini Aventador S.
