JAGATSINGHPUR: IN a heart rending incident, a 23-year-old woman committed suicide after killing her five-year-old son at Sithalpur village under Naugaon police limits on Friday night.

The woman, identified as Tanuja Rout, threw her son into a pond and hanged herself from a tree at an isolated location in the village. However, mystery shrouds the deaths as the victim’s family members cremated the bodies without informing the police. They said the woman took the extreme step as she was mentally unstable.

On the other hand, locals alleged that the woman was murdered and her body hung to a tree to make it look like suicide. They said as per Hindu customs, the body of the child should have been buried. The villagers further alleged that the deceased woman’s family members hurriedly cremated the bodies to destroy evidence.

The locals also contradicted a statement by the victim’s father that his daughter was mentally unstable.

Meanwhile, IIC of Naugaon police station Prangya P Kar said the woman took the extreme step due to a mental disorder. “The victim’s father has given a written statement that his daughter was mentally unstable”, the IIC said, adding the case is being investigated.
