Nagpur: ‘Suhana Safar’, a programme based on the songs of legendary
Mukesh, was a testimony to the fact that new but talented singers can recreate the magic of that sweet voice which continues to be loved even in the modern day cacophony of music.
The programme, organized by ‘Sargam’ at Madhuram Hall of Mor Hindi Bhavan to mark the 95th birth anniversary of Mukesh Chandra Mathur, captured the hearts of the audience which soaked in his evergreen hit songs.
Immortal songs of Mukesh like ‘Sur ki gati mein kya janoo’, ‘Kahi dur jaab din dhal jaye’, ‘Suhani chandni raatein’, ‘Kisi ki muskurahaton pe ho nisar’, ‘Mujhko is raat ki tanhai’, ‘Chandsi mehbooba’, ‘Maine tere liye hi’, ‘Oh mehbooba’, ‘Chandan sa badan’, ‘Toba ye matwali chaal’, ‘Jot tum ko ho pasand’, ‘Kahin karti hogi’, ‘Saranga teri yaad mein’, ‘Mera joota hai Japani’, ‘Duniya banana wale’, ‘Kya khoob lagti ho’, ‘Chand aahe bharega’, ‘Hum safar’, ‘Hum toh tere aashique hai’, ‘Ruk ja o jane wale ruk ja’ and ‘Suhana safar’, besides others.
The audience relished every presentation by the non-professional singers who were from as varied fields as teaching, advertising, counselling, journalism and business. One could see the audience’s mood changing with a shift in song. While they listened patiently to songs like ‘Hum safar’, they also couldn’t stop from applauding when ‘Mera joota hai Japani’ was presented.
The singers included Vijay Deshkar, Abhay Vyas, Arvind Raje, Sanjay Pullarwar, Ram Subramaniam, Vilas Dandge, Dr Pravin Jadhav, Nandu Andhare, Brijmohan Sharma and little one Dhanashree, besides others.
The accompanying artistes were Pawan Manwadkar (keyboard), Prakash Chavan (guitar), Nitin Vinchurkar (octopad) and Suresh (tabla). Pushpa Anand anchored the programme.
Sargam is a cultural organization started in 1990 by Unnikrishnan which holds musical programmes and also gives a platform to the new talent.
