Rajnandgaon Member of Parliament Abhishek Singh has welcomed the decision of GST Council to exempt sanitary napkins from GST. GST tax on sanitary pads was cut from 12 percent to zero, as per the announcement made by Finance Minister Piyush Goyal after the meeting on Saturday.

Rajnandgaon MP had written a letter to Finance minister to free the sanitary pad from GST. Keeping the rural and poor women unable to use it, it should be kept out of the purview of GST.

Singh had cited in the letter based on different organisations had 12 percent of women in the country use sanitary napkins while in developed countries like Japan, Singapore it is cent percent and Indonesia it is 88%. 70 percent of women in India does not use sanitary napkin as the rates are high, lack of awareness and lack of availability. Thus it was urged to keep the sanitary napkin from the ambit of GST. It is a necessary product for all women and awareness must be created among women. It should not be seen as a product for revenue but self respect of women. A healthy woman would make a healthy family. He thanked the Finance Minister Piyush Goyal for taking the decision.
