JULY INVITATIONAL: Mike Hunsinger/Jay Crowley capture FRCC's prestigious tournament

FALL RIVER – In a true team effort, Mike Hunsinger and Jay Crowley captured Fall River Country Club’s July Invitational golf tournament last weekend.

Hunsinger and Crowley combined to shoot a 6-under-par net 29 for a one-stroke victory over Steve Howard and Dennis Maltais. Hunsinger, a one-time runnerup in the FRCC Club Championship, played to a 2 handicap, Crowley to a 9.

TheJuly Invitational, one of FRCC's majors, consisted of five rounds of match play, reducing the field to 11 teams for the nine-hole medal play final.

Crowley contributed two net birdies (Nos. 1 and 5) and a net eagle on the par 4 fourth hole.

Hunsinger had a big up-and-down par save on No. 3, a birdie on No. 6 and then a crucial up-and-down net three for a birdie on the ninth hole.

Hunsinger and Crowley are longtime tournament partners at FRCC. Husinger said it was Crowley who got him into golf during Hunsinger’s college days. Hunsinger did not play golf at Durfee High School.

Two teams were two strokes off the lead at 31, third-place PJ Mattos/Jason Pacacha and fourth-place Mike Martin/Tim Martin. FRCC veteran Paul DeCoste and Paul Archambault were fifth at 31.5 and were followed by Justin Viera/Brad McCaffrey (32), Mark Rodrigues/Gary Berlam (32.5), Shawn Rapoza/Jeff Hankins (32.5), Daryll Levesque/Joe Kaminski (34), Bill Fonseca/George Wood (35) and Nick Puniello/Craig Lotz (35).

The winners in the consolation round were: Luke Gagne/Ryan Porter (29.5), first division; Jeff Souza/Derrick Swimm (30), second division; Bryan Wilbur/Mike Crowley (30.5), third division; Steve Moniz/Bill Berlo (30), fourth division; Dan Quinn/Sean Cottrell (30), fifth division; Frank Travassos/Dave Ramsden (28), sixth division; Brandon Magoni/Derek Raposo (27), seventh division; Brian Munro/Kyle Stone (31), eighth division; Sean Gurry/Dave Lenz (31), ninth division; Eric Kelly/Ted Trahan (30.5), 10th division; Jim Black/Larry Burns (32), 11th division.
