DETROIT—Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV will appoint a new chief executive Saturday in an unexpected move to replace the ailing Sergio Marchionne, who engineered the merger of Fiat and Chrysler and led the combined company for nearly a decade, according to a person familiar with the auto maker’s plans.
Fiat Chrysler’s board met in Italy on Saturday to name a successor for Mr. Marchionne, who underwent an undisclosed surgical procedure earlier this month, said the person familiar with the company’s plans.
